THE SQUARE IN POMEZIA
The center of social life in Pomezia
The square"
If you ask a pometina like me what there is to see in the city, surely the first answer you will receive will be Piazza Indipendenza.
At the end of the walk along Via Roma, the city street, you will arrive at the center of social life in Pomezia.
Initially known by the name of Piazza dell'Impero, Piazza Indipendenza is a clear example of rationalist architecture, i.e. of the style shared by the Foundation Cities (born following the reclamation of the Agro Romano and Pontino) and which is characterized by essential lines, with the constant presence of arches and the exclusion, as much as possible, of iron and exposed concrete, in favor of coverings in local materials such as, in this case, tuff and travertine.
Among the various buildings, the Civic Tower stands out, the symbolic monument of Pomezia, which was also used as a cistern and which was destroyed at the end of the Second World War and rebuilt shortly after.
The Town Hall, the historic fountain, the Post Office, the Church of San Benedetto da Norcia (patron saint of the town), the former Casa del Fascio (today headquarters of the Municipal Police Headquarters) and the Petrucci Gardens complete the square.
Furthermore, since 2019 there is also the City of Pomezia Museum - Laboratory of the twentieth century.
The Historic Center of Pomezia is part of the Network of Historic Houses of the Lazio Region.
“Vivere il Territorio” is a project of “Viaggio o Son Desta?”.
