THE NATURE RESERVE IN POMEZIA
The Sughereta di Pomezia Nature Reserve just a few minutes from the city center.
The "green lung" of Pomezia
A forest just a few km from the city centre.
I'm talking about the Natural Reserve of the Sughereta di Pomezia. This has been the official name since 2016, when this place became part of the Castelli Romani Park.
For long-standing pometini it is simply the "Sughereto", the favorite place to train, get away from the chaos of the city and enjoy a walk in the shade and sheltered from the wind or summer heat.
The cork oak, which gives its name to the forest, is an evergreen oak typical of this territory, of the area that goes from the coast to the hinterland of the Colli Albani.
The peculiarity of the Sughereta di Pomezia can be summarized in one word: coexistence. In addition to the cork oak, there are other types of trees, including holm oak, downy oak and laurel.
The presence of several tree species allows the creation of many micro habitats that host a great variety of plant and animal species, sometimes even rare. Again, Nature teaches us that, with adaptation, coexistence is possible in any type of environment.
The role of the inhabitants was fundamental for the protection of this green space, threatened several times by building speculation, arson and illegal waste dumping.
Citizens, committees and associations joined together and started a battle with signature collections, demonstrations and information and educational activities which, after twenty years, led to its recognition as a protected natural area.
“Vivere il Territorio” is a project of “Viaggio o Son Desta?”.
